Day by Day

On arrival to Lima, you will be met at the airport and taken by private transport to your boutique hotel located in the most famous district of Lima, Miraflores. Miraflores is well known for its oceanside views, beautiful parks, and world-class museums. If you arrive early enough in the day, you can spend some time walking along the Malecon, feasting on some ceviche, or grabbing a beer at one of the many delicious microbreweries.

Today is all about rest and relaxation as the activities will commence tomorrow.

After sleeping in and having a light breakfast, it is time to embark on a half-day gastronomic experience and enjoy the delicious flavors of Peruvian cuisine. After meeting our guide at Plaza San Francisco in the famous bohemian district of Barranco, we will be walking for the next four hours to several different locations to try some of Peru’s most famous food and drink.

The best part of this food walking tour is that not only will you be enjoying delicious lomo saltado, ceviche, pisco sours, and other delectables but you will also be taking in the sights around the famous Barranco district. Barranco is known for its art galleries, graffiti murals, ocean views, and colonial architecture. It truly is one of the best places to see when in Lima.

After the food walking tour, we will return to the hotel where you are free to take a siesta and prepare yourself for the evening. Be sure to ask our guides for any restaurant recommendations if you are looking for something special for your last evening in Lima.

Today, we will wake up a little early to get to the airport for the short flight to Cusco City. The flight is a mere 90 minutes, giving us ample time for the day. After arriving to Cusco, we will immediately travel to the town of Pisac located in the Sacred Valley. Pisac is a quaint Valley town known for its ruins high above the town. We will explore the archaeological complex above Pisac for some time before descending back down the mountain and into the town square. While in Pisac, we will have a little time to shop, walk the cobblestone streets, and take in the sights of the green mountains that surround us.

After our time in Pisac, we will head to the Hacienda Huayoccari for a private lunch filled with many traditional Peruvian dishes. All of the vegetables used in the dishes are grown right there at the estate.

After a filling lunch, it is time to travel to the hotel where you can relax for the rest of the day. Walk the grounds of the hotel and find a patch of grass to lay down in for a while or maybe book a massage at the front desk. You are free to spend the rest of the day as you would like before we head to Moray and Maras the next day.

After a good night’s sleep and a delicious breakfast, it is time to head to the Incan agricultural laboratory at Moray. Close to the town of Chinchero lies these ancient circular agricultural terraces. Each level of terraces exhibits a different temperature and a unique ecosystem, allowing the Incas to study which crops perform best at which temperature, elevation, and ecosystem before planting their crops on a much larger scale throughout the entire valley and surrounding areas.

After some time touring Moray, it is time for lunch in the nearby town of Maras. Surrounded by an impressive landscape of high mountains and green fields, the restaurant is the ideal place for tourists visiting the area to enjoy a world-class meal. In this restaurant, visitors can enjoy a unique gastronomic experience selected and prepared with ingredients from a cultivated field and an organic bio-gardens located in the area.

After lunch, we will visit the Maras salt mines. The salt mines at Maras have been used since pre-Inca times. Maras consists of over 5,000 different salt ponds; a truly dazzling site to see nestled in the slopes of the Sacred Valley.

After Maras, it will be time to return to the hotel to rest and enjoy some free time before heading to Machu Picchu in the morning.

Waking up for the 2nd day in a row in the beautiful Sacred Valley, you should feel rested and rejuvenated before we head to Machu Picchu today. After a quick breakfast, it is time to gather our things and head to the train station in Ollantaytambo. From Ollantaytambo, we will hop aboard one of the most famous train rides in the world that winds through the cloud forest and to the town of Aguas Calientes.

After arriving in the town of Aguas Calientes, we will go by bus up the mountain to the gates of Machu Picchu. There we will meet with our bilingual guide who will take us through the ancient citadel for the next two hours while explaining the cultural, historical, and spiritual significance of the UNESCO site and all its different structures.

At the end of the tour, it is time to return to the town of Aguas Calientes for a special lunch that will satisfy your taste buds and replenish your energy.

After lunch, it is time to head to the train station from where we will go to Ollantaytambo to meet with our private driver who will take us to our hotel in Cusco. Once we check in at the hotel in Cusco, you are free to find a restaurant in the city, order something for delivery to your hotel room, or try something at the hotel bar/restaurant.

After a wonderful breakfast, we will pack our day packs and head out for the Cusco City Tour. The Cusco City Tour starts by visiting the Qorikancha or Golden Temple, considered the most important religious center of the Incas. We will also visit the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral of Cusco, to admire its beautiful architecture and colonial paintings before we get on the tour bus that will take us to visit four nearby archaeological centers: Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay.

After the tour, we will have lunch at one of the most famous restaurants in Cusco. Cusco is home to some of the best restaurants in all of Peru known for their fusions of Peruvian and international cuisines.

After stuffing ourselves with some high-quality locally sourced food, it is time for a little dessert at the ChocoMuseo. One of Peru’s main exports is chocolate. At the Choco Museum, we will learn about the complete process of producing chocolate with their comprehensive Bean-to-Bar workshop. You will also have the opportunity to make your own personalized chocolate treats, an ideal present for friends and family back home or the ideal snack for back at the hotel.

Once we have loaded up our own little grab bags of personalized chocolate goodies, we can then head back to the hotel where we will break for the day.

Free day to explore Cusco at your own pace. Visit the nearby food markets or sample local flavors at a traditional ‘picanteria’ restaurant, a very popular choice for Cusquenos eager to eat the local delicacy of guinea pig.

Later in the afternoon, we will enjoy a Street Food tour, one of our favorite foodie experiences in the city. Sample the best flavors from the street vendors such as tamales, anticuchos, and every Peruvian’s favorite, picarones.

After the Street Food tour, you are free once again to explore the city on your own. Tonight is your last night in the city, so be sure to ask our guide about where you can get some free salsa lessons or catch some live music after dinner.

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to your guides and continue on with your travels solo. If you have a flight to catch, make sure you prearrange transportation with us to take you to the airport. If you are continuing to travel in Peru on your own, we wish you a safe journey. Also, be sure to talk to us if you would like to book an additional tour to take you to Puno and Lake Titicaca, Arequipa and the Colca Canyon, or Iquitos and the Amazon Rainforest. We are always here to help!

FAQ

All international flights into Peru route through Lima, with connections to most
destinations throughout the country. Some flights out of North America and Europe
arrive late in the evening after the last flight to Cusco has departed. In these cases, an
overnight stay in Lima will be required before proceeding to Cusco. Your Inkati Peru
travel specialist will be happy to assist you with making any necessary hotel
arrangements.
Traveling to Cusco: There are four airline carriers that fly round-trip between Lima and
Cusco: LATAM Airlines, Sky and Viva Air. All offer similar schedules and in-flight
service, but we usually recommend either LATAM Airlines as they tend to be the most
helpful when unexpected flight cancellations or delays occur. Your Inkati Peru travel
specialist can also assist you in selecting the best flight options for your trip.

We always encourage our guests to extend their trips with, at minimum, a couple of pre-
adventure days in Cusco to provide time for altitude acclimatization while they explore
the remarkable beauty of the city. Depending on availability, we would be happy to
book accommodations for you at the best option hotels. We also recommend that our
guests plan an extra night at Machu Picchu for a more comprehensive exploration of the
citadel.
Inkati Peru can also help you plan and book any additional accommodations or
excursions that you might like to experience during your time in Peru. We offer a
collection of trip extensions to some of Peru’s other notable destinations: Lima,
Arequipa, Nazca, Lake Titicaca, the Amazon and of course, within Cusco and The
Sacred Valley. Please alert your Inkati Peru travel specialist if you would like to build
any additional experiences into your trip.

All guests are required to provide valid proof of travel insurance, including specific
coverage for adventure travel activities in Peru.

On any Trek to Machu Picchu or alternative trek, guests hike 4-8 hours per day on six
(6) consecutive days along rugged mountain trails and at various elevations (up to
15,000’/4,500m). Pre-trip preparation should include challenging cardiovascular
exercise including regular hikes on varied terrain, and a healthy, balanced diet. Well-
worn hiking boots and additional acclimatization nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley
before the trek are both highly recommended. Having said this, please be assured that
all guests are encouraged to hike at their own pace and take breaks whenever needed to
ensure a successful and enjoyable trek for all.

The weather in Cusco is defined by two seasons: Rainy and dry. Wet season typically
runs from November through March, with average temperatures of approximately 56°F
(13.3°C). Occasional showers are expected throughout this period, with the heaviest
rains occurring in January and February. Dry season is normally from April through
October or November, during which time you can expect mostly sunny days followed
by cooler nights and the possibility of morning frost. The average daytime temperature
around this time is 49.5°F (9.7°C). July is regularly recorded as the coldest month of the
year; in some locations night temperatures can drop as low as 32°F (0°C).
Keep in mind that Cusco is located in a high-mountain environment where variable
weather is expected. Rain can occur in the middle of July just as sun may appear in
January, so it is always important to be prepared for four season in one day.

Altitude sickness is most common at elevations above 6,500’/1,900m and results from
the body adjusting to a decreased amount of oxygen. To combat this, Inkati Peru
recommends spending some nights in Cusco or the sacred valley prior to the start of any
adventure program. In addition, it is always important to drink plenty of water. In case
of extreme altitude sickness, both oxygen and First Aid Kid are available as needed.

Once you have booked your Inkati Peru Trip, you will receive a packing list that
outlines the items that you will need for the trip. We recommend packing your
belongings in a regular size suitcase or duffel bag for the duration of the program. You
will only need a day-pack during the adventures parts.
Please be aware that the train company to Machu Picchu imposes a baggage weight
limit of 12kg/27lbs per person. Inkati Peru offers duffel bags on loan; please request one
at the beginning of the program in Cusco if you think that your luggage will exceed this
weight. Extra luggage can be stored safely at your hotel in Cusco.

Although most of Peru operates with an electrical current of 220V. Most of the devices
use to have incorporated the convertor in their chargers.

Second only to the Himalayas, the Andes rise to over 19,000’/5,800m. The rugged
Andean landscape is comprised of dramatic mountain ranges separated by deep vertical
canyons and green valleys. The eastern slopes of the Andes are veiled in cloud forests
which receive plentiful rainfall as they drop into the Amazon Basin.
All of the trails are well-maintained and safe. Adventurers can expect sometimes to
cross sections of original Inca Trails depending on the route , this in addition to newer

paths that may sometimes include steep, rocky,

The official currency of Peru is the “Sol” (S/.), although US Dollars are also widely
accepted. If you are carrying cash be sure to bring crisp, unsullied US bills since torn or
defaced currency will not be accepted locally. ATM machines that dispense both US
Dollars and Nuevos Soles are readily available in the city of Cusco. Credit cards are
generally accepted only in the more upscale restaurants and shops in Cusco and the
Sacred Valley. Note: VISA is most widely accepted, followed by MasterCard.
American Express is accepted in very few places.
During your trip in Peru in adventure parts, you will only need to carry a small amount
of cash for souvenirs and minor personal expenses. We recommend taking Nuevos
Soles in small denominations for purchases en route. Optional gratuities for trip leaders,
assistant guides, and any other staff can be given in either currency.

Gratuities are not included in the trip cost; but we leave this to your discretion.

We are sure you have already told friends and family about your trip. Please take a
moment (or more!) and tell us about the highlights of your journey, about your
companions and guides, and anything else that made your journey unique. Please share
your photos with us too and remember to tag us with #experiencemlp.
